Ram Manohar Lohia is a nationalist political leader and a well known activist for the Indian Independence Movement. He was born on 23rd March, 1910 in Akbarpur, Uttar Pradesh. He, greatly followed the ideologies of Mahatma Gandhi. 'Salt Satyagraha' was the subject of his PhD thesis paper.
Early life
He attended the Benaras Hindu University for his intermediate course . He did his graduation from Calcutta University in 1929. Soon after that, he went to Germany to join the Berlin University and learn German. He was known to join the Simon Commission and also organised a hartal Bal Gangadhar Tilak's death.
Political Career
He organized 'Association of European Indians' in Europe .He joined the Indian National Congress and he also established the Congress Socialist Party. In 1936, he was elected as the Secretary of All India Congress Committee .An article on 'Satyagraha Now' in Gandhiji's newspaper Harijan made him arrested and was sentenced to two years imprisonment on 7th June, 1940 . After the independence period, he took up the responsibility to build a dam on river Paniyari which was called 'Lohia Sagar Dam'. He tried to help the farmers by forming the 'Hind Kisan Panchayat'.
Some of his major writings include- India, China, and Northern Frontiers, Hyderabad, Navahind; The Caste System Hyderabad, Navahind; Guilty Men of India's Partition, Lohia Samata Vidyalaya Nyas, Publication Dept.
Death
Lohia died on 12th October, 1967. The Dr.Ram Manohar Lohia College of Law, Bangalore is named after him.
